Business Buyer School Research
Research Calendar: The Next Six Studies
One new study a month from November 2026 to April 2027. Each answers one question for a buyer from public data.
Proposed list, not a promise. Every row is Planned, date is a target: a month can move, and a study can change or drop if the data does not support it.
The next six studies
· Planned, date is a target
Hiring and Wages by Industry
- Question
- Which industries face the most pressure on wages and hiring?
- Public data source
- Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages, with JOLTS openings rates shown as sector context only.
- What a buyer does with it
- Test the labor cost line in a seller's numbers and see where a manager hire will be hardest.
· Planned, date is a target
Workplace Injury Rates by Industry
- Question
- Which industries carry the highest injury and illness rates?
- Public data source

· Planned, date is a target
Cost Structure from Tax Data
- Question
- How much of each receipts dollar do industries report as costs?
- Public data source
- IRS Statistics of Income integrated business data. Taxable income is not EBITDA and the study will not call it that.
- What a buyer does with it
- Compare a seller's margin to a public range for the industry and question the gap.
· Planned, date is a target
Big Firm Concentration by Industry
- Question
- In which industries do a few large firms take most of the sales?
- Public data source
- Census Bureau Economic Census concentration tables, if the 2022 tables are out by then.
- What a buyer does with it
- Decide whether a small firm competes with giants or with other small firms.
· Planned, date is a target
Small Firms by County
- Question
- Where inside a state are the small firms in an industry?
- Public data source
- Census Bureau County Business Patterns. Suppressed cells stay blank.
- What a buyer does with it
- Pick the counties to search first, then screen real listings there.

Atlas Edition 2027.1 With Version Changes
- Question
- What changed in each industry since the last Atlas edition?
- Public data source
- Business Buyer School's own published manifests plus the newest releases of the source data.
- What a buyer does with it
- See which earlier readings moved before relying on them.
Publishing rule
Every study ships with all four of these on the same day, or it does not ship:
- A short version a buyer can read in minutes.
- A full report with every table.
- A methodology page with sources, formulas and limits.
- The data as CSV and JSON, with a SHA256SUMS.txt checksum file so you can check a download.
Every page carries a published date and a last updated date. Scores, ranks and coverage figures are Business Buyer School modeled estimates, and the sources are named.
Version rule
The version number changes only when a number, rank, score, file or method changes. A page edit that changes none of those keeps its version, and the version history says so.
The shipped studies are listed on the research home, each with its own version history.
